The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
