The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
