Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important political figure stated the incident rendered him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
